Goodbye Universe, hello me.

January 23, 2010 | 5:46 pm

So, as you can probably tell, I got a new domain name! I’ve wanted one for awhile that was shorter and less juvenile than weirdncrazy.com/universe, and not a subdomain. Unfortunately, all the decent combinations of my first and/or last name that I could think of were taken … I even considered clai.re for a second (.re = Reunion Island), but didn’t feel like dealing with the extra effort when cla1re.com was available. Even though it’s not my first choice, I’m definitely happy with it :smile:

It’s CSS Naked Day again! This is my 2nd year participating, and I would’ve forgotten had it not been for this blog lol. So yeah … yay for web standards :)

Code Markup.

December 2, 2008 | 3:36 am

If you’re looking for a simple WordPress plugin that escapes code, get Code Markup. I’ve just spent hours trying to find a replacement for Code Autoescape (which started doing weird things and seems to be abandoned) that works with WordPress 2.6.5, and Code Markup was the only close match that’s still being updated (I think) and does what I want out of the box. I don’t like that it doesn’t work in comments (there is a patch though), but I can deal with that for now — it’s late and I have to get up in 5 hours!

Edit: The comments patch works, but you have to change the last line from this:

add_filter('comment_text', 'tguy_cmu_fix_quotes', '11');

To this:

add_filter('comment_text', 'tguy_cmu_tidy_code', '11');

CSS Naked Day.

April 9, 2008 | 12:22 am

No, my blog didn’t break — I’m doing CSS Naked Day! And I know I haven’t updated in forever, but I finally managed to upgrade to WordPress 2.5 today (which took longer than I thought … frickin’ incompatible plugins) and figured it’d be a good time to make at least one new post.

So yeah … here’s to XHTML and web standards and accessibility … and hopefully more posts from me in the near future!

Do not want.

December 21, 2007 | 12:29 pm

Never thought I wrote anything of importance here, but I guess content theft doesn’t care about that. So imagine my surprise when I checked my WordPress dashboard a few minutes ago to find a trackback from a splog (spam blog) on my last UM post. The splog seems to be targeted towards the keyword “treadmill” and subsequently grabs content when it appears on other sites. At least they give credit to the original site? Ugh. At the moment I’m glad nofollow is automatically on in WordPress — don’t want to delete the trackback just yet so people can see everything in its original state :neutral:

Halp?!

December 20, 2007 | 2:24 pm

I have no idea why there are so many errors right now (though it is related to categories) — I didn’t do anything to my site in the last 24 hours, and yesterday everything was fine (I think)! Here’s hoping that A Small Orange Support can shed some light …

By the way, I do have a real post in the works. Now that school’s over (forever!) and work is temporarily on hold, I should have some time to get back into blogging!

Edit: It was apparently an “intermittent problem with MySQL.” Yay for awesomely fast support people!

One fish two fish red fish blue fish.

Just an update on things. Nothing spectacular, but hey, I’m tired of my only posts being memes. This post’s title also has nothing to do with anything.

I’ve started looking for post-graduation jobs both here and in Myrtle Beach, and of course it seems opportunities are everywhere except the beach. I mean, yeah, I’ve found a couple, but only one was slightly promising … and they’re definitely not falling into my lap like the Northern Virginia/DC ones are *sigh* I hope it gets easier once I’m actually there.

Since I only renew my domain for 1 year at a time, it is again up for renewal at the end of December. As usual, I’m torn — should I change my domain name to something more professional (like something-related-to-my-name.com) or stay with what I’ve had for 8 years? I don’t want to lose all my visitors (not to mention creating broken links on however many hundreds of sites that list my URL), but I also don’t want prospective employers to be turned away by something a 15-year-old created for Hanson and for fun, who never dreamed that in 8 years she’d be pursuing a related career. I also don’t want to have 2 separate domains. So, what should I do? Stay with my few loyal readers and keep my credibility? Or start fresh and jump into the “real,” adult world with a legitimate portfolio (i.e. not on Coppermine), new blog layout, and maybe even ditch the whole fanlisting thing? Your thoughts please …
